25th Annual D.C. High Heel Drag Queen Race
This year marked the 25th anniversary of the annual High Heel Drag Queen Race, one of the D.C. area’s more unique Halloween traditions. Held on the Tuesday before the 31st, thousands of spectators lined up to catch a glimpse of costumed drag queens showing off their elaborate outfits and racing down 17th Street in Dupont Circle. The event was first held in 1985 when more than 100 drag queens strolled up and down the “runway” prior to the race. The three-block race itself—from R to Church Street on 17th--lasted a mere 30 seconds (while many of the slower queens taking far longer), but the party ensued for hours on end. See all the crazy costumes and relive all the wild fun with our pictures!
