In the tradition of all the best clubs, Eighteenth Street Lounge has no sign marking its small door next to the mattress store on 18th St. NW, only a small plaque that can take years to notice. Opened by DJs in 1995, the Lounge has always been all about the music, which has kept it from becoming just another pretentious, passing hotspot full of couches and pretty people. International beats, often from artists on the Lounge's record label and the co-owner's Thievery Corporation are spun on the first floor, while live soul or steel drums perform upstairs. The space is actually an old mansion, and the Lounge keeps it real with chandeliers and fireplaces. In summer the small back deck is a wonderful happy hour-secret, before the nightly cover charge and dress-code kick in.
