Miss Virginia, Tara Wheeler, partnered with the St. Baldrick's Foundation to raise money for pediatric cancer research. The Miss America board set a fundraising goal of $500,000 for Wheeler, and had she reached that goal, she would have shaved her head alongside the over 40 St. Baldrick's participants or "shavees" (which included three women, not Ms. Wheeler though) at the official event held at Crystal City Sports Pub in Arlington. While Miss VA fell just short of the fundraising goal, she spoke at the event, brought plenty of media attention, shed light on the efforts of many to try and find a cure for children's cancer and raised over $55,000 for life saving research.
