They came from far and wide, armed with Whole Foods snacks, bottles of Pellegrino, thermoses of red wine, blankets and lawn chairs. Thousands of die-hards have been storming the National Mall to partake in one of DC’s most beloved pastimes: Screen on the Green. And this year's attendees have a bit more to celebrate than just another summer movie on the mall.
After talk of the event’s biggest sponsor, HBO, pulling out earlier this year, thousands of residents banded together in an enormous grassroots effort to bring the outdoor film series back from the brink of extinction, and the turnout this season has been amazing. Running for just one more week (Monday, August 10), the free outdoor event takes place on the Mall, between 4th and 7th streets. Next week's movie, "Rebel Without a Cause", starts between 8:30 and 9, but don’t wait until the last minute—the lawn fills up fast as dedicated moviegoers get their hours early. Enjoy the show!
