5. "Hugo"
Director: Martin Scorsese; Cast: Asa Butterfield, Chloë Grace Moretz, Ben Kingsley
Brian Selznick's wonderfully inventive 2007 children's book "The Invention of Hugo Cabret" was such a loving tribute to the power and impact of cinema, you'd think it was tailor-made as the source material for Martin Scorsese's first family film. Instead, we're just lucky the blissful union actually happened, and Scorsese matched Selznick's playful surprises with his own apt decision to film in eye-popping 3D. What was a visual and narrative delight on the page, becomes a visual and narrative delight on screen, and a persuasive ode to never losing sight of the joy of storytelling.
