7. "Moon"
Director: Duncan Jones; Cast: Sam Rockwell
“Moon” wasn’t the only impressive sci-fi film of 2009, but it was probably the most undervalued. An indie release without a flashy marketing campaign, Jones’ film was both the year’s most exciting directorial debut and a thrilling throwback to genre landmarks like “2001: A Space Odyssey” and “Blade Runner.” It’s smart, funny and mysterious, but also contemplative and soulful. Rockwell’s dazzling work as a space grunt confronted with his own double is a reminder that special effects are no substitute for the magic of a great performance.
