New Edition vs. Robbers on High Street: 'Cool It Now'
New Edition: The 1980s response to the Jackson 5, with a similar over-the-top (corny) cool. Members included Johnny Gil, Bobby Brown; Bell, Biv and Devoe. Shirts were usually optional during performances.
Robbers on High Street: Brooklyn indie rockers two albums into an accomplished, if not understated, career that aligns them heavily with Spoon. Frontman Ben Trokan doesn't just sing a lot like Britt Daniel, he's casually cool in the same let's-have-a-beer way.
Who sings it better?
Throw the original on at any party, and dancing is guaranteed (expect during the 30 second rap interludes; those are awkward). Robbers make a strong effort, especially with the sweet harmonies and falsetto. Where does that come from, boys? Advantage, New Edition.
