Soft Cell vs. My Brightest Diamond: 'Tainted Love'
Soft Cell: English New Wave duo (singer Marc Almond, pictured, and producer David Ball) took an obscure soul song, recorded in 1964 by American Gloria Jones, added a catchy synth hook (can't resist that stomp, stomp) and planted it on the Billboard Hot 100 for a record breaking 43 weeks.
My Brightest Diamond: As a student at University of North Texas, singer/instrumentalist Shara Worden honed her alter-ego, My Brightest Diamond, by taking her classic voice and piano training and blending it with non-traditional elements like downbeat and prog-rock. She soon caught the attention of Sufjan Stevens, with whom she toured as a member of his Illinoisemakers cheer squad.
Who sings it better?
MBD's Garbage-meets-Reznor dark electronica is fresh, but she doesn't breathe as much new life into the track as Almond and Ball did. Advantage, Soft Cell.
