Looking back, it’s hard to believe, but Sir Elton insisted he was not gay right up until the late ‘80s—he insisted that he was bisexual (which was sort of fashionable in the '70s and early '80s). He was even married for a time to a woman, recording engineer Renate Blauel. He met his current partner, David Furnish, in 1993; in 2005, the couple entered into a “civil partnership,” a British version of gay marriage.
