Flash Bang Grenada
Latest release: “10 Haters” (out Aug. 23 on Hellfyre Club/Grimm Image)
Who: Rapper/producer Busdriver is one of the godfathers of Los Angeles’s weirdo hip-hop underground, the twisted genius behind such classics as “Temporary Forever” and “RoadKillOvercoat.” Freestyle prodigy Nocando is the resident emcee of L.A.’s legendary club Low End Theory, which launched the careers of Flying Lotus, Gaslamp Killer and Baths. Together they are Flash Bang Grenada, and they are here to prove that SoCal leftfield hip-hop doesn’t have to be full of misogynist rants (sorry, Odd Future).
What they’re saying: “As usual, they’re rapping circles around your favorite rapper.” – Fader
What we’re saying: From rhyming “saag paneer” with “chandelier” (on “Moisturizer”) to name-checking the Jonas Brothers, Amy Poehler, crop circles and Cyrano de Bergerac in just a few blindingly fast verses (as Busdriver does on the ironically titled “Beat My Bitch”), Flash Bang Grenada serve up so much mind-bending wordplay on this album’s 10 tracks that it’s almost unfair. And they do it over awesomely tweaked-out tracks by some of L.A.’s most cutting-edge beatsmiths, including Dibiase, Nosaj Thing, Free the Robots and Shlohmo. So basically, “10 Haters” is the “Watch the Throne” of experimental hip-hop—minus the massive egos and Maybach-trashing music videos. Bow down. – Andy Hermann
