Rodrigo y Gabriela
Metal, acoustic, flamenco and rock performed by a Mexican duo that cut their teeth playing the tourist-packed Temple Bar and Grafton Street pubs of Dublin, Ireland? Not necessarily a traditional way to stardom, but Rodrigo y Gabriela fine-tuned their ever-changing sound in these high traffic-areas and eventually caught the ear of Irish singer-songwriter Damien Rice, who invited them to open for him at the giant Oxegen music festival in 2005 just outside Dublin. Bolstered by the exposure, Rodrigo Sanchez and Gabriela Quintero went on to become breakout stars with their 2006 self-titled hit album that ended up No. 1 on the Irish charts. The album was produced by John Leckie (Radiohead and My Morning Jacket) and featured several original tracks as well as their acoustic versions of rock anthems by Metallica and Led Zeppelin—some of which were on display at their sold-out 9:30 Club show. Opening for Rod y Gab was The Alex Skolnick Trio—known for its inventive jazz-infused hard rock and metal.
