The Roots at the 9:30 Club
The Grammy Award-winning The Roots, proved why they’ve been one of the most beloved hip-hop bands around. The Philadelphia natives are best-known for their jazzy eclectic brand of hip hop with heavy use of live instruments, lead by founding member ?uestlove, the most recognizable drummer in all of hip hop.
Other standout performances were “Captain” Kirk Douglas on guitar—who served as soulful backup vocals during his performance of the smash hit “You Got Me” with Damon "Tuba Gooding Jr."; Bryson--who was dubbed “the hardest working sousaphonist in the business”; holding down the fort was lyricist Black Thought -- who rapped alongside D.C.-native and hip hop star Wale, who made a surprise guest appearance towards the end of the show. Wale greeted fans in the lobby at the 9:30 Club during the show, and then surprised everyone who didn’t spot him when he came out to sing his incredibly catchy hit “Pretty Girls.”
An amazing show, highlighted by Wale's special surprise appearance. Sadly, concert photographers were only allowed to take pics of first three songs--so no Wale with The Roots pics.
