Col. Brook’s Tavern has been a Brookland/Catholic University staple since 1980. Next door was Island Jim’s, which with its outdoor seating is now used for special occasions by Col. Brook’s. It’s as much a popular neighborhood haunt as it is a destination. The Brookland/Catholic University station on the Metro Red Line is just across the street. There are two floors and the main bar area is warm and welcoming. The specialty is the Col. Brook’s Sandwich, which can be served cold or hot. The breads are pumpernickel and rye and in between are hearty servings of pastrami, turkey and cole slaw. Price are very reasonable and drinks run on average between $4.95 and $5.25. The Brookland section of D.C. is an area that needs to be explored more and Col. Brook’s is a good place to start.
