This is good stuff…literally. Welcome to Good Stuff eatery, which opened its doors on Capitol Hill in July ‘08. So what’s so good about it? Well, for starters, the happening joint is owned by Spike Mendelsohn, a former contestant from the Top Chef TV show (which he refers to as “one of the most humbling experiences of my life”), who packed his bags, kissed Manhattan goodbye and has now set up shop and home right here in Washington.

The menu is comfort food all the way around. A taste of Americana with an elegant twist. The burgers are out of this world like the “Blazin Barn,” with pickled daikon and carrots, mint, cilantro and Thai Basil; and the “Vegetarians are people too ‘shroom burger” with Portobello tops, muenster cheese, cheddar cheese and panko crumbs. “Spike’s Village Fries,” replete with fresh thyme and rosemary are an inventive addition. And for the health conscious, the menu also includes a variety of salads, such as the Greek wedge and ensalada.

The sweet treats can’t be ignored. Their handspun shakes, which include the toasted marshmallow and Milky Way malt taste like a small piece of heaven not to mention their assortment of floats. Craving alcohol? All right, how about their ice cold drafts, including Yeungling lager and bottled Red Stripe beer.

No damage done here. This stellar joint is inexpensive and the food is good (true to its name). Don’t forget, a former Top Chef is at the helm so you can expect the grub to be up to par. Everything is under 10 bucks, which means you can eat to your heart’s content and then some.

Cheap Eats

Thanks in large part to the dwindling amount of funds in my bank account, I'm cutting back on eating out. But when I've got a little bit of cash to burn, these are some of my favorite cheap eats around town...
