The Rib Pit is definitely authentic; a wood-fired smoker built of white glazed brick dominates this tiny carryout on 14th Street N.W. The immediate neighborhood looks a bit rough, and a bulletproof partition separates employees from customers, but it's worth it for the best ribs in the District. The meat is a dark pink from long smoking, but the smoky flavor isn't overwhelming. In addition to the quality of the ribs, the great tomato-based sauce has just enough fire to keep things balanced. In addition, The Rib Pit offers a pulled pork sandwich and potato salad that are worth checking out.
