Café Saint-Ex is a hip, modern take on an American bistro-café nestled between the 14th Street and U Street Corridors.  The café’s ambiance combines romantic privacy with vibrant, lively conversation, illuminated by an aviation-inspired art deco décor. Menu items change two to three times a week, depending equally on the freshest shipment of ingredients and the whimsical culinary creativity of the executive chef.

Saint-Ex also contributes to the bustling nightlife of the U Street Corridor. An extensive wine list and impressive selection of specialty beers attracts a steady flow of 20-somethings well after the kitchen closes. The establishment’s underground lounge, Gate 54, hosts a Washington-area DJ every night starting at 10 PM. Although the ensuing dance party’s vibe will depend mostly on who’s spinning, Gate 54 generally grooves to an eclectic mix of funk, soul, rap, pop and rock.

I had the worst culinary experience of my life there (twice). The ambiance matches the food perfectly. Overcooked and flavorless food, spilled beer...
