“I want to be Wonder Woman for Halloween,” one Redskins cheerleader states eagerly. But in many ways, her and her fellow cheerleaders already are. They’ve got the tight, red, curve-hugging outfits. They move swiftly and smoothly. And like our female superhero, they do it all.
That’s right, these cheerleaders aren’t like the ones you might have known in high school, who slacked off in the classroom so they could focus all their time and energy on their dance moves. They’re all-around all stars: the kinds of girls who somehow manage to juggle sports with work and being well-liked. To the Redskins cheerleaders, what seems like a balancing act is just part of the job. If they’re not mothers, the cheerleaders have to work full-time, or be enrolled in school full time. This means that they’re attending rehearsal twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays, working every weekday (full-time), and cheering at every game.
One cheerleader who has a full-time day job teaches dance on the nights she isn’t rehearsing, as if two jobs weren’t enough. So next time you watch these ladies at a Redskins game, give them some credit. They aren’t just pretty faces, and they aren’t just great dancers and tumblers---they’re also some of the hardest workers you’ll meet. So hardworking, some haven’t even found the time to plan their Halloween costumes yet…
