African Continuum Theatre
The only professional black theatre company in Washington DC, ActCo as it is affectionately known, has been around since 1989. Since then, there have been over 30 productions, from classics like Lorraine Hansberry’s “Raisin in the Sun” and James Baldwin’s “Amen Corner” to shows from up-and-coming artists like Lynn Nottage. The once nomadic troupe is now housed in the Atlas Performing Arts Center in N.E., part of the reviving H street corridor. ActCo has received numerous Helen Hayes nominations and awards. In addition to shows, ActCo also sponsors Fresh Flavas; staged readings of works-in-progress by playwrights of color, and BobCo (Back on the Block Company); an outreach group that offers classes to children in the community.
