After years in a dusty warehouse, Signature Theatre recently got new digs in Shirlington. Musical theater is Signature’s bailiwick, and the works of Stephen Sondheim are featured prominently here. Signature also has made an art of out re-working forgotten or overlooked plays and musicals, and it recently transferred a show to Broadway (the quick-to-close “Glory Days”). Signature has received 59 Helen Hayes Awards for its work and has played host to such theatrical luminaries as Chita Rivera.
Signature is also the recipient of the 2009 Regional Theatre Tony Award for its contribution to the development of the art form outside of New York. Signature is the 34th recipient, and only the second from amongst the many outstanding Washington area theatres to be given this great honor.
